Prairie Creek SP, Crescent City
After Trinidad, we continued north along 101 until we reached Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Upon arriving there, we set up camp and checked out our immediate surroundings, including a visit to "Big Tree". It's a bit odd to give that name to one particular tree, when so many of them are giants.
The next morning we were greeted with more cool weather and overcast skies. We headed towards the coast and made a stop at Trillium falls. These falls were not huge- maybe 10ft tall- but despite that were quite impressive. Following that we headed to Fern Canyon, which was the highlight of the trip for me. As the name implies, the canyon walls are completely covered with ferns! It is much better in person than in the photos.
We made lunch along the beach while watching the fog blow in and out of the trees, though it wasn't too cold. On the way back to the highway, a black bear was watching the road, but did not want to have its picture taken.
While getting gas on the way up to Crescent City, we found that Liz was an aunt! We visited the light house, then warmed up with some hot drinks before heading back to the camp. Next morning we broke camp (in full sun, of course) and headed for home. A great trip, just a little too short!
